Getting into a rental car accident could be frustrating.
Usually you are in a city that you do not know, a state with laws that you are
not intimate with, and you are driving somebody else’s car. This is a formula
that may give you a huge headache. So here is an overview of how rental car
accident claims get handled and settled.
When you rent a vehicle, the rental company will ask you
for your proof of insurance. Many of them will ask for your
Declarations Page. They want to see what coverages you have. They will be
looking for liability, collision, and comprehensive, in your policy.
Liability is because it is required by law, but collision and comprehensive will
protect the car you will be driving. 99% of the companies out there will extent
coverage to the rental car and the rental company knows that.
Rental companies will want to know how much your
deductible is. Your deductible is the part of the loss that you are “self
insuring”. For example, if the harm to the car is $5,000 and your deductible
is $500, then the insurance company will only recompense $4,500 ($5000 – $500
deductible); you will have to remunerate the $500 out of pocket. Many rental companies
will require that your deductible be less than $500 or you will have to buy
extra insurance at the time of renting the vehicle.
When you rent the car, then rental agent will ask you if
you want extra insurance. Three things may happen: you decline all together, you
buy extra insurance, or you buy a collision harm waiver. Depending on which
option you select, the rental car accident will be handled differently by your
insurance company.
First, if you decline all together, then you better have
an active policy that will provide primary party coverage for the rental car. Your
insurance company will be responsible for paying the rental company for the
rental car, but those payments will be subject to all the terms of your policy.
What this means is that your deductible will employ and you will have to remunerate that
to the rental company up front. It does not matter that you were not at fault
for the accident; the rental car company is entitled to get the car fixed as
soon as possible. Your insurance company will be responsible for going after the
responsible party
The limitations of your policy may cause various
problems. Mainly it will be on the loss of use,
click here to learn more in regards to the LOU in a rental car accident. If you do
not carry rental coverage on your policy, you will owe the rental expenditures to
the rental company as if they had to rent a car. If the vehicle will take five
days to repair, then you will owe the five days rental. Also, if you do carry
loss of use coverage (rental car coverage) in your policy, but the limit is
below what the rental car would rent for, then you would owe the difference. For
example, your rental coverage is $40 per day, but the rental car cost is $50 per
day, you will owe the $10 divergence amid the two.
Second, you buy “extra” insurance. This is where things
can get a little complicated. The insurance adjuster ought to look at actual policy
that you purchased (not given to you when you sign). The terms of that policy will
determine how the accident will be handled. Some rental insurance coverages
provide finish coverage any rental car accident as long as you compensate the
premium. They would cover the car that you hit (if you are at fault), and the
rental car damage. You could still have a deductible. Your insurance company
usually will step in as a secondary form of coverage in case the rental car
insurance policy limits are low. However, you need to read both insurance
polices together to see which one would compensate basi and which one would recompense as the
secondary.
Last, you buy collision harm waiver. Many humans will
tell you that this is coverage for your deductible. This is not true. When you
rent a car, you agree that you will return the vehicle as it was given to you.
You also agree that in case of a rental car accident, you will remunerate for the car.
A collision harm waiver will waive that provision of your
contract. This means that you are no longer responsible for the rental car.
However, you still need to file a assert for your medical bills (in case of
injury) and to defend you or pay for the car you hit (if you are at fault).

Best Solution for NUVI in my Prius and my Ford: Theft Protection As Well!! By A. Stagg My Prius has a rough dashboard and a windshield that slopes very sharply. Thus, the suction cup mounts are not good solutions. Fortunately, the friction mount is a great solution. It works much better than I expected. Very stable, does not slide, and lets me adjust my Nuvi to a variety of different angles. I can place the GPS anywhere on the dash or even on the center console. Also works great when transferred to my wife’s Ford.
Only downside to the device is that it has a rather large footprint, but not prohibitively large. I like the fact that I can easily use this in both of our family vehicles depending on where we need the GPS.
UPDATE: Now that I have used this mount regularly since May, I have to say this is the best mounting solution I’ve found for a GPS or any other device for my car. It hasn’t slid out of place once!! Given the rise in GPS units being stolen from cars, this mount allows you to easily stash your GPS Unit and mount out of sight and then put it back into position with ease.
2009 Update: Still using this in my Prius and my wife has one too. It’s held up quite well. It IS a bit bulky to store out of the way when not in use, but still a good solution. I usually remove my GPS from the mount (a simple process) and then place the mount as far under the seat as it will go. Not perfect, but the best solution I’ve found to date.

Well designed By Dylan Ginsburg This mount works great. The selection of Garmin mounts is confusing as some are two parts and some are one. If you have a Nuvi with the included windshield mount, then this is the only part you need to buy. The included mount disassembles at the ball and socket joint and attaches to this one. I can’t say it will never come off the dash if I do some really high speed maneuver, but so far it’s held steady for all regular driving.
I like that it’s easy to move the mount and gps unit down to the floor when I park. Yeah a thief could still see it if they came right up to my car but at least it’s not obvious from halfway across the parking lot like a windshield mount is. A thief that sees an empty windshield mount is probably going to assume (correctly) that I’ve just put the unit in the glove compartment.

Finally, the right mounting solution By Richard Buck I have become addicted to my Garmin Nuvi 660 and used it for six months with a successful windshield mount. But now I have bought a new car. I discovered that the windshield suction mount left an ugly black ring on the window of my old car. (I assume I can get this cleaned up when I detail the car for selling.)
So no way was I going to put one of those on my beautiful new car. I tried the Garmin dashboard mount but shied away from the “permanent” disc. I found the “temporary” disc was just not up to the job of holding this device in place — at least on my vehicle. I found this very frustrating. I read about the Portable Friction Mount, found a Best Buy store that had it in stock and ran out to buy it.
Though it is not terribly good looking, it does the job very well. I tried whipping around a few tight turns in parking lots and the whole thing stayed put. As another reviewer said, this lets you easily remove the thing and put it on the floor so it’s not obvious. That may be more valuable than you would think. I know somebody who removed his Garmin Nuvi (and took it with him) but left the window mount in place. The car was broken into and the window mount alone was stolen. (Probably that was a pretty frustrated thief.)
Also, this will be easy to transfer to a rental car. And it will make it easy for my wife to borrow my Nuvi. Hmmm!
